Educational Vodcasting

Educational Vodcasting

Welcome to Educational Vodcasting!
This site is devoted to teaching educators how to use podcasts and vodcasts to increase student achievement. This is the brainchild of Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams who are pioneers in the field of using vodcasts in the classroom. They have devised a new method of teaching called Pre-Vodcasting. In this model, students watch vodcasts at home and class time is spent in engaging hands-on activities and directed problem solving. Both Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams are High School Science teachers in Woodland Park Colorado, at the base of Pikes Peak. Thus far, students using the Pre-Vodcasting model have been very successful in mastering Chemistry. We believe that all teachers can benefit from Vodcasting their lessons live, and that the Pre-Vodcasting can revolutionize instruction in Math, Science, and Foreign Language.

PISA 2009 Results

PISA 2009 Results
Are students well prepared for future challenges? Can they analyse, reason and communicate effectively? Do they have the capacity to continue learning throughout life? The OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) answers these questions and more, through its surveys of 15-year-olds in the principal industrialised countries. Every three years, it assesses how far students near the end of compulsory education have acquired some of the knowledge and skills essential for full participation in society.

This course is designed to introduce the concepts, principles, and practices of the juvenile justice system. The primary topics of this course include examinations of specialized juvenile law and the unique role of the courts, police, and corrections in the juvenile justice system. An important aspect of the course is for students to understand the role that race, gender, class, geographic location and other demographic variables play in the likelihood of one finding his or her way into the juvenile justice system, as well as the manner in which social service agencies (treatment facilities, diversion/prevention programs, child protective services) interact with the formal juvenile justice system.

Social Security Facts vs Fog | OurFuture.org

Social Security Facts vs Fog | OurFuture.org

Conservative just hate Social Security. The Social Security program is an example of government at its best. It demonstrates We, the People taking care of and watching out for each other. It works, it is efficient and effective, and people love it. For their war against government to work conservatives have to find a way to undermine Social Security.

Conservatives have been at war with Social Security since its inception. They call it a "Ponzi scheme." They claim that it is "going broke." They claim that people live longer so we should increase the retirement age... They claim a lot of things. The question is, are any of them true? Or is each just one more area where conservatives are trying to throw up a smokescreen to mask their real intentions? (because it's what they do.)

Former Mayors Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani Announce Support for Cathie Black as Schools Chancellor

Urge State Education Commissioner to quickly grant waiver

Former New York City Mayors Edward I. Koch, David N. Dinkins, and Rudy Giuliani today announced their support for Cathie Black to serve as the next schools Chancellor. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Ms. Black’s appointment at a news conference last week, and this week will submit a request to State Education Commissioner David Steiner asking him to grant her a waiver to serve as Chancellor.

In a letter to State Education Commissioner David Steiner today, the former Mayors wrote, “With 24 years of experience as Mayors of the City of New York, and with a shared commitment to seeing our city and its schools thrive and succeed…we urge you to approve Mayor Bloomberg’s request for a waiver to enable Cathleen P. Black to serve as New York City Schools Chancellor.”

The former Mayors went on to write, “It is clear that Ms. Black certainly has an extraordinary track record of managing large organizations through trying circumstances. We believe that Mayor Bloomberg’s faith in Ms. Black’s competence and her proven history as an outstanding executive is, in and of itself, reason enough to grant the necessary waiver.”

Under the State Education Law, a School District Leader certificate is required for Ms. Black to serve as Chancellor of the New York City Public Schools. State Education Law section 3003(3) and 8 NYCRR Part 80-3.10(b)(3)(iii) authorizes the Commissioner of Education to grant a certificate to a candidate who does not meet certain educational and training requirements but “whose exceptional training and experience are the substantial equivalent of such requirements and qualify such person[s] for the duties of a superintendent of schools.”

Mayor Bloomberg said, “These are three individuals who understand the need to have someone who is talented and competent running an agency of this size, and that, at the end of the day, the buck stops with the Mayor. I appreciate their support for Cathie Black and for their commitment to helping our schools thrive.”

Cathie Black is currently Chairman of Hearst Magazines, where she has led a team of some 2,000 employees producing more than 200 local editions of 14 magazines in more than 100 countries. Under her leadership, Hearst had record-breaking years – they built on decades of success with titles like Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, Popular Mechanics, Redbook, and Town & Country, introduced highly-acclaimed new titles like O, The Oprah Magazine and created digital platforms that were inconceivable in 1995. As the media industry has tackled digital changes, Hearst Magazines has been widely-regarded as being at the forefront of that evolution.

Current and former elected officials who have expressed support for Cathie Black include: former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone, Sr., Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, State Senators Andrew Lanza, Marty Golden and Craig Johnson, and City Council Member James Gennaro.

Why Thirty-Six ?

Mystical Hasidic Judaism as well as other segments of Judaism believe that there is the Jewish tradition of 36 righteous people whose role in life is to justify the purpose of humankind in the eyes of God. Tradition holds that their identities are unknown to each other and that, if one of them comes to a realization of their true purpose then they may die and their role is immediately assumed by another person:

Write a brief summary of what we learned in class today. Include enough detail so that someone who was away sick, or missed class for any other reason, can catch up on what they missed. Over the course of the semester, the scribe posts will grow into the textbook for the course; written by students for students. Remember that as each of you write your scribe posts. Ask yourself: "Is this good enough for our textbook? Would a graphic or other example(s) help illustrate what we learned?" And remember, you have a global audience, impress them.

AllThingsPLC » Blog Archive » Grading Formative and Summative Assessments

We feel that the better strategy is to use the assessment in the following ways:

1. Use the assessment to identify students who are not yet proficient on a particular skill or concept.

2. Require those students to keep working on that skill or concept in a structured schoolwide intervention program that is timely, directive, and systematic. This intervention never removes the student from class. Time is purposefully carved out in the daily schedule to provide students who struggle with additional support.

3. When the student has demonstrated proficiency in intervention, allow the student to retake an assessment on the skill or concept in question. If the student is able to demonstrate proficiency, the failing grade should be dropped and replaced by one that demonstrates proficiency because grades should reflect student learning, not how fast they learned.

Professional Learning Communities: What Are They And Why Are They Important?: Introduction

Introduction

In education circles, the term learning community has become commonplace. It is being used to mean any number of things, such as extending classroom practice into the community; bringing community personnel into the school to enhance the curriculum and learning tasks for students; or engaging students, teachers, and administrators simultaneously in learning - to suggest just a few.

Student Engagement for this purpose is defined as any activity in which students are working as active partners in shaping their learning experience.

Practice Questions

Science assesses skills in the areas of:

Interpreting data, including:

* observing
* measuring
* interpreting diagrams, tables and graphs

Applying data, including:

* inferring
* predicting
* concluding

Higher order skills, including:

* investigating
* reasoning
* problem solving

These skills are embedded in the syllabus documents of all the key learning areas and are meant to be taught in context.

The skills are tested in contexts drawn from four Science knowledge areas:

* Earth and Beyond (incorporating the Earth Sciences and Astronomy)
* Natural and Processed Materials (incorporating Chemistry)
* Life and Living (incorporating Biology and Ecology)
* Energy and Change (incorporating Physics)

Steps of the Scientific Method
Steps of the Scientific Method

Overview of the Scientific Method

The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to vary in a predictable way.

Just as it does for a professional scientist, the scientific method will help you to focus your science fair project question, construct a hypothesis, design, execute, and evaluate your experiment.

Clearwire CEO sees bright 4G future | Signal Strength - CNET News: "How would you describe the different markets that you each address?
A Clear customer is often a cord-cutter. This customer has a mobile phone, but no fixed line phone in the house. He wants high-speed broadband, but he doesn't want to be tethered to a fixed broadband service. People use Clear when they are in the house and when they are out on the go. They also probably don't have cable TV service. Instead, they watch Hulu, YouTube, or other video sites for TV downloads"

4G is built for data
2G or 3G, which were voice services with data bolted on

There are customers who are on the edge of the cell network. And they get enough of a signal to get teased with the service. But it doesn't work great in those areas.
We've been expecting the competition, and we've worked that into our numbers

NPR Investigation: Private Prison Companies Helped Write SB1070Arizona’s draconian and constitutionally suspect anti-immigration law has garnered a great deal of public attention and sent a wave of fear through immigrant communities in that state and across the country. Today, a National Public Radio investigation deepens that story, exposing a sinister tale of backroom profit and politics.

NPR’s Laura Sullivan reports that SB 1070, which makes it a crime to be an undocumented immigrant in the state and requires racial profiling, was largely conceived and drafted by a conservative business lobbying group in Washington, D.C. The group, called the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, includes board members from state and federal elected officials as well as representatives of major companies including the Corrections Corporation of America, the country’s largest private prison company. Russell Pearce, the Arizona state legislator who claims responsibility for SB 1070, is one of the state legislators on ALEC’s board.

Be Not Afraid Lyrics
If you pass through raging waters
in the sea, you shall not drown.
If you walk amidst the burning flames,
you shall not be harmed.
If you stand before the pow’r of hell
and death is at your side,
know that I am with you, through it all
Be not afraid,
I go before you always,
Come follow Me,
and I shall give you rest.

A New Generation of Wi-Fi in K-12

A New Generation of Wi-Fi in K-12:

A New Generation of Wi-Fi in K-12

School districts have gone online to improve student learning, professional development, data management, safety, and district-wide communications. To achieve all this, they must connect users' computers to a network – preferably, one that doesn't break the budget and is straightforward to maintain and grow. These networks require some smarts and enhanced features so they can be quickly provisioned and managed. They also need the performance to support the latest instructional multimedia applications. And, as their role becomes central to daily instruction and administration, they need rock-solid reliability.

In short, districts require "business-grade" wireless networks. What does that mean? This eBook answers that question. It introduces you to a new generation of intelligent wireless networking that delivers the robustness of a business-grade network while remaining cost effective for cash-conservative K-12 installations.

ISTE, OER, Moodle…oh MY! Tips for a successful ISTE 2010 experience

ISTE, OER, Moodle…oh MY! Tips for a successful ISTE 2010 experience

The annual ISTE 2010 conference is right around the corner, and it is refreshing to see how much has changed at NECC (now ISTE) since the dot-com boom days of for-profit ed tech companies spending gobs of venture capital funds by raffling off VW beetles, to serious discussions about open education resources (OER) and non-profit organizations focused on teacher effectiveness and student achievement. I am excited for this year’s conference as many of the discussions will involve the growth of OER and mobile technologies; which is a key direction that PBS TeacherLine will be moving in the coming years. We are also focusing our efforts on assiting schools and districts implement the Common Core Standards in their teachers’ classrooms.

Here are a few tips I would like to share as I ready myself for the ISTE 2010 conference this week.

Make sure you leave time in your agenda for unexpected conversations. Don’t schedule every minute of your day; leave some space for reflective thought or time to meet someone for coffee/snacks/drinks to discuss what you heard in a previous workshop/meeting. These can be some of the most rewarding and useful meetings you will have.

Take a few minutes everyday to reflect on what you learned. You may have heard a quote that really sticks in your mind. Save it before you forget it! If you gathered some leave-behinds during workshops, jot down how you can use this information effectively when you return.

Take notes about your experience, and possible changes you may make for the next conference. By the time a year goes by, you may have forgotten some key ways to make the experience more effective.

Of the things you learned, which can you replicate or adapt for your needs right away? If you can’t, think about that information’s relevance.

Meet with your colleagues as soon as possible to reflect and summarize the information gained at the conference. Whether they attended or not, this is a good practice for you to categorize your experience and information gathered as “most helpful”, “somewhat helpful”, and “not helpful at this time”.

As you “cruise” the exhibit hall, go ahead and sign up to receive emails from vendors. I know this scares some people, but this is a great way to start receiving informative newsletters and discounts toward some of the resources you may find useful in your building(s). All companies must have an unsubscribe policy so if you start to receive too many emails, or the information you expected isn’t arriving in your inbox, simply unsubscribe.

Use social media tools to gain information you might have missed.

TWITTER – Follow the #ISTE10 tweets for those quick tips, comments, and information you might have missed in a different workshop. Even if you don’t use twitter, you can follow these at http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23iste10.

FACEBOOK – If you use facebook, look for companies or individuals from whom you can gain worthwhile information and friend them, or become a fan to receive their updates.

BLOGS – I have a feeling that you will not be able to go 10 feet without tripping over someone blogging about their experience at ISTE 2010, but if you want to find a list of bloggers, here is a great place to start: http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/2010/communities/blog.php

PBS TeacherLine will be exhibiting during the ISTE 2010 conference in Denver, CO as a part of the PBS Neighborhood (booth 948), and we will be sharing information about how our online professional development offerings will be transitioning to meet the OER expectations educators and ed tech directors have for increasing teacher effectiveness.

Moodle

PBS TeacherLine online courses have always been delivered in some form of a course management system, and we strive to provide learners the best experience possible when enrolling in our courses. Previously, courses were delivered through CMS companies, but starting June 23rd, all PBS TeacherLine courses will be delivered via Moodle. We feel this move is not only in keping with the PBS standard of high quality educational experiences, but a prudent move toward OER adoption in preK-12 schools. The Obama administration has placed the focus of content, it’s delivery, and access on OER and this move will help keep the cost of high-quality professional development at a minimum for educators.

iPad

In the near future, PBS TeacherLine will be developing professional development experiences delivered via mobile applications. And to help ISTE 2010 attendees get started on the road to app-enlightenment, we are hosting daily prize drawings in the exhibit hall (booth 948) where we will give away an iPad® each day.

Come On In, Make Yourself UNcomfortable

Secondary Dominant
Come On In, Make Yourself UNcomfortable
Comfort does not equal competence. Now I’m not saying that we should embrace being uncomfortable head on; clearly there are moments when such a feeling equals danger. We should however reflect on why things in the classroom make us feel that way.

GULF DISASTER: END OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING NOW

Historical Background

After the Second World War, the business was dominated by a small group of very powerful and mostly American companies, which were dubbed the Seven Sisters: Standard Oil of New Jersey, which later become Exxon; Royal Dutch Shell, an Anglo-Dutch company; British Petroleum, which eventually shortened its name to BP; Standard Oil of New York, or Socony, which became Mobil; Standard Oil of California, or Socal, later Chevron; Gulf Oil; and Texaco.

MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

Choice Words ---Peter Johnston

"Choice Words is a groundbreaking work, and perhaps the most powerful and teacher-friendly book ever published." —Richard Allington
Peter Johnston

In productive classrooms, teachers don't just teach children skills: they build emotionally and relationally healthy learning communities. Teachers create intellectual environments that produce not only technically competent students, but also caring, secure, actively literate human beings.

Podcast
Choice Words shows how teachers accomplish this using their most powerful teaching tool: language. Throughout, Peter Johnston provides examples of apparently ordinary words, phrases, and uses of language that are pivotal in the orchestration of the classroom. Grounded in a study by accomplished literacy teachers, the book demonstrates how the things we say (and don't say) have surprising consequences for what children learn and for who they become as literate people. Through language, children learn how to become strategic thinkers, not merely learning the literacy strategies. In addition, Johnston examines the complex learning that teachers produce in classrooms that is hard to name and thus is not recognized by tests, by policy-makers, by the general public, and often by teachers themselves, yet is vitally important.

This book will be enlightening for any teacher who wishes to be more conscious of the many ways their language helps children acquire literacy skills and view the world, their peers, and themselves in new ways.

Welcome to Teaching Without Walls

Life Beyond the Lecture.

Education is at a pivotal moment.  In recent years, we have watched our world transform from an industrial to a digital society.  Nearly every aspect of a young person's life today is different from the way it was experienced just a generation ago -- the way a young person socializes, accesses information, purchases products, and values work.  Life for the digital generation is mobile and dynamic.  Their social experiences are largely shaped through their unique online social network and the products they buy are personalized to their liking.  Their daily environment is saturated with rich, multi-layered information that flows continuously in visual, as well as textual form.

Other People's Rejection Letters

College students graduating this month are entering a still-precarious job market. Bill Shapiro's advice to them: Aim high; who cares if you get rejected? Shapiro knows the sting of rejection better than most -- he is a collector of rejection letters. His trove includes a 1956 "thanks, but no thanks" from the Museum of Modern Art to Andy Warhol and a 1962 write-off of Jimi Hendrix by the U.S. Army, deriding him for being unable to "carry on an intelligent conversation." Shapiro joins guest host Tony Cox to talk about the value of rejection, and his new book, Other People's Rejection Letters.

E. D. Hirsch’s Curriculum for Democracy by Sol Stern, City Journal Autumn 2009

Chairman and Founder

E. D. Hirsch, Jr. is the founder and chairman of the Core Knowledge Foundation and professor emeritus of education and humanities at the University of Virginia. He is the author of several acclaimed books on education issues including the best-seller.  Electrified by the insight gleaned from this research, Dr. Hirsch developed his groundbreaking concept of cultural literacy—the idea that reading comprehension requires not just formal decoding skills but also wide-ranging background knowledge. In 1986, he founded the Core Knowledge Foundation, and a year later, published Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs To Know. A surprise publishing phenomenon, the book remained at the top of the New York Times best-seller list for more than six months.

For nearly three decades, in books, articles and lectures, Dr. Hirsch has passionately argued that schools should teach a highly specific curriculum that would allow children to understand things writers and speakers take for granted, and to fully participate in democratic life. “We will achieve a just and prosperous society only when our schools ensure that everyone commands enough shared knowledge to communicate effectively with everyone else,” Dr. Hirsch concludes.

Creating a Post-Crisis Economy: How to Design a Participatory System BY Tim BrownFri May 1, 2009

Design Thinking » thoughts by Tim Brown

At TED last year, Ideo CEO Tim Brown called designers "a priesthood in black turtlenecks and designer glasses." In his recent book, Change by Design, he challenges them to move beyond creating pretty objects -- to think big. Ideo's Human Centered Design Toolkit, a free guide for NGOs and social enterprises working in the developing world, is a prime example.

A site or repository for fan-created stories that revolved around characters from popular literature, television, comics, or real-world celebrities. Unlike other fan fiction sites, FanFiction.Net allowed stories about any characters rather than revolve around a specific set of characters.

Registration was open to all people who claimed to be over 18, and by 2002 over 118,000 people were registered. (The age limit has since been moved down to 13.) At that time, one-third of the registrants self-identified as 18 or younger, and 80% were female.

The Twist through the Ages

A Plea to the Nobel Prize Committee by Chubby Checker
In 1958, Hank Ballard wrote "The Twist" ----Hank Ballard and the Midnighters
"American Bandstand" host Dick Clark was so enamored of the tune that he had Ernest Evans re-recorded it. Dubbed "Chubby Checker" by Clark's wife, the Philadelphia singer took "The Twist" to the top of the pop chart twice, in 1960 and again two years later. Checker's version was so close to the original that Ballard, upon first hearing it on the radio, thought it was his own.

Todd Boyd teaches at the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, writes: "I would suggest that you might get a better read of what's going on in the world of Black people today by listening to DMX on It's Dark and Hell is Hot than by listening to repeated broadcasts of Martin Luther King speeches."
