Accelerators for America's Future | Applications
Image via WikipediaAccelerators for America's Future | Applications
Physicists have been inventing new types of accelerators to propel charged particles to higher and higher energies for more than 80 years. Today, scientists estimate that more than 30,000 accelerators are in operation around the world—in industry, in hospitals and at research institutions. The following benefits are just a few examples on a growing list of practical applications.
Supporting global particle physics communication
Interactions.org helps anyone involved in the communication of particle physics to share resources and information. Interactions.org provides images, contacts, news and other information for news stories, articles, presentations, reports and papers.
Education and Public Outreach
Interactions.org helps students, teachers, the public and scientists in all fields better understand the nature and value of particle physics research; the current status of initiatives, people and facilities involved in particle physics; and other matters that affect particle physics and the world.
The free, unhampered exchange of ideas and scientific conclusions is necessary for the sound development of science, as it is in all spheres of cultural life. (Albert Einstein)

Join a movement of powerful women and men who are teaming up with Oxfam to help women around the world fight hunger, poverty, and climate change.
Hunger is not about too many people and too little food. It's about poverty--and inequality. And women and girls face the greatest inequalities of all.
But it doesn't have to be this way. Oxfam has brought together a diverse group of American women as Sisters on the Planet. We are raising awareness about climate change, hunger, and other crises facing women in poor countries. We are using our influence to support women as they fight poverty and hunger now and for generations to come.
Now it's your turn.

Exploring the Environment®
http://www.cotf.edu/ete/main.html |
We may need to live "more lightly" on our home planet, but it is certain that we cannot live on the Earth and have no impact whatsoever on it. Thus, it is important that we figure out the best courses of action in light of the information we have now. Let us also be willing to change our minds as new data and understanding come to us from new sources in the future.

The Center for Educational Technologies also houses the Challenger Learning Center®, which provides students, teachers, and adult learners with simulations that emphasize teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills. The Challenger Learning Center in Wheeling is one of 47 centers worldwide established by the Challenger Center for Space Science in memory of the space shuttle Challenger. More than 40,000 students fly missions each year either at the Wheeling facility or through distance learning. The Challenger Learning Center has been honored nine years for having served the most children of all the centers.

Abraham Lincoln (December 1, 1862) Quote
Abraham Lincoln (December 1, 1862)
"The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."

What is Google Chrome OS? new web-based operating system.

What is Google Chrome OS?
Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.

What is the Federal Reserve and what does it do?
Periodically, I hear about the Federal Reserve raising interest rates or lowering interest rates. But what is the Federal Reserve? Is it a governmental body or a private one? Does it just set interest rates or does do other things?
The Federal Reserve is considered an independent central bank. It is independent since its decisions do not have to be ratified by the President or Congress. The Federal Reserve System was created by Congress in 1913 "to provide for the establishment of Federal reserve banks, to furnish an elastic currency, to afford means of rediscounting commercial paper, to establish a more effective supervision of banking in the United States, and for other purposes."

Every country on Earth is reforming education and learning.Sir Ken Robinson
Sir Ken Robinson, world-renowned education and creativity expert, gave an enlightening talk about education reform around the world. Education reform is happening less through legislation, and more through an awakening of what creativity, knowledge-gathering, and motivation really are. Education reform is a critical topic as Thomas Friedman (of the NYTimes and ‘The World is Flat’) recently opined that, ‘America’s core competency is is ability to attract, develop and unleash creative talent.‘
Is that competency in danger? Are other countries struggling as well?
Sir Ken Robinson challenges a few key assumptions that stem from the intellectual culture of the Enlightenment and the economic circumstances of the Industrial Revolution.
The most alarming statistic Sir Ken Robinson provides is from a study on divergent thinking published in Breakpoint and Beyond. Divergent thinking is the ability to think of many answers to a specific problem… this is the first step to problem solving… before we get analytical and make THE BEST decision (this latter process if where business education focuses today). 98% of 1500 kindergartners scored at the genius level for divergent thinking. Their scores went down as they progressed in the education system.
What examples have you seen of successful education reform? What programs are creating vibrant students who are making a difference in the world?

- Why do we batch students by age or year? Shouldn’t we batch students by their respective skill in a certain topic?
- Why do we educate students in the same class sizes? Don’t some learn better in large groups, small groups, or even alone?
- Why are all students forced to learn during the same hours? Some students are geared towards morning, afternoon, or evening learning.

"I Had Come Face to Face with Evil": Leon Bass Talks about his Experiences of Racism
Leon Bass, a retired educator, describes his encounters with racism when he volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1943, and his anger when the people he was to protect and defend let him know that he "wasn't good enough" to be treated as an equal. Upon seeing inmates of the Buchenwald concentration camp shortly after its liberation, he realized the extreme that being "not good enough" could take. He returned home determined to get an education despite the discrimination he faced, and to fight against that discrimination. As a high school principal he witnessed the impact a Holocaust survivor had on his students, and was inspired to share his personal story. Bass speaks at the Facing History and Ourselves 2010 Cleveland benefit dinner.

Healthier Testing Made Easy: The Idea of Authentic Assessment | Edutopia
Here's a radical idea: We need more assessment, not less.
Seem crazy? Substitute feedback for assessment, and you'll better understand what I mean. The point of assessment in education is to advance learning, not to merely audit absorption of facts. That's true whether we're talking about that fourth-period pop quiz, the school play, or the state test. No one ever mastered a complicated idea or skill the first -- or fifth -- time. To reach any genuine standard, we need lots of trials, errors, and adjustments based on feedback.
Think of assessment, then, as information for improving

THE WACO HORROR: GRISLY 1916 LYNCHING STILL OVERSHADOWS CITY
"Any talk of the triumph of Christianity, or the spread of human culture, is idle twaddle so long as the Waco lynching is possible in the United States of America," wrote W.E.B. DuBois, editor of the NAACP's newspaper. On the afternoon of May 15, 1916, renowned Waco photographer Fred Gildersleeve set up his box camera on the second floor of City Hall, aiming it at a small tree below.
Under the tree, men were stacking wooden boxes for a fire. A crowd of hundreds, then thousands began to swarm.A roaring mob rushed to the scene from the courthouse, carrying a black teenager and mutilating him with knives. The men slipped a chain over the tree and began dangling the boy over a fire, to the cheers of a crowd estimated at 15,000. The orgy of torture would continue for more than an hour, ending with the decapitated body dragged through town.Gildersleeve had gotten advance word of the lynching of 17-year-old Jesse Washington, who was on trial that day for murdering and raping a white woman. The 35-year-old photographer joined the mayor and police chief in the mayor's office to watch the afternoon's spectacle. A faithful chronicler and booster of Waco, Gildersleeve was planning to sell postcards of the event.
