Brooklyn MC : Boys and Girls High School

Boys and Girls High School is more than just a school. It’s a vital part of Bed-Stuy’s history and a symbol of our ability to provide a viable future for Central Brooklyn’s young people.  Our willingness as a neighborhood to rally behind Principal Bernard Gassaway, and raise the school above the city's failing grade level, is a test of our collective resolve and resilience.

The Brooklyn Movement is the product of informal conversations held in 2009 and 2010 between groups of neighbors who recognized the need to encourage and support a growing spirit of grassroots activism in Central Brooklyn. Several independent community organizing efforts - like the fight to convert the Bedford-Atlantic homeless shelter into a community safe haven, the organizing of a local food coop, the attempt to address community policing abuses – demonstrated that Central Brooklyn needed to deepen and expand its ability to build  and mobilize power among ordinary citizens.
